With the Edinburgh vs. Glasgow Warriors match drawing closer, the Ladies Vets teams started the city rivalry early with the Annual 'Dick Day Tournament', this year at Peffermill. The Glasgow visitors had not only arrived with a large support, they also had a large squad for the East vs. West clash. With Glasgow being the holders, the pressure was on them to hold onto their title. The Edinburgh girls were focused on keeping the title in the Capital though; even the Fijian International team who were training at Peffermill didn't divert the girls’ attention for too long due to their focus on the match which they hadn't won in 4 years. The match kicked off and it was the Edinburgh side who looked the most likely to score with a number of attacks being thwarted by poor handling at the last minute. It took 15 minutes before the deadlock was broken. RDVC scrum half, Fiona Potts, made a blindside break from a scrum just inside the Glasgow half, supported by Kiri Shallcross who then passed onto Lottie Gaunt for her to cross the whitewash. 5-0 to the Edinburgh side. It was another 15 minutes before the next score and this time it was the Glasgow side who got their tally off the mark after a long kick kept RDVC in their own half and eventually the West coast team got their try. The rest of the half was slightly scrappy, although there were some big tackles going in around the park and the Edinburgh pack had a fair amount of tidying up to do. Half time 5-5.
Early into the second half it again looked like Edinburgh who would score and score they did. On 46 mintues Jenni Kenny, taking the initiative when RDVC were awarded a penalty inside the Glasgow 22, with a quick tap and go and a dive over the line. 10-5 to the Edinburgh side. The typically vociferous West Coast crowd could sense that their team were still in the game and tried their best to encourage them. However, on 66 minutes it was the Glasgow crowd who were sensing that their trip back along the M8 was going to be a miserable one. A break from Amy McCallum down the left wing, supported by Lottie Gaunt brought RDVC into the Glasgow 22 and with it drew in most of the Glasgow defence. The Edinburgh forwards cleared out the Glasgow girls and the RDVC fly half, Siobhan Garner, recognised where the overlap was and spread the ball to the right wing for Sarah Matthews to go over in the corner. 15-5 to the Edinburgh side.
On 71 minutes Sarah Matthews crossed over on the right again, although with a little more work to do this time. Substitute centre, Caroline Scobie, drew the last defender and passed onto Matthews, however, the Glasgow full back did well to get across and try to stop Matthews, all to no avail. Edinburgh now led 20-5. The Edinburgh side continued to attack and man of the match and Edinburgh captain, Fenella Johnson, twice looked like she had broke free from the last line of Glasgow defence only to be brought down by a trailing thread of her shorts.
One last press from the Glasgow team saw them break into the Edinburgh 22 and caused Lottie Gaunt to put in a last ditch tackle that was deemed too high. A Penalty Try was awarded in the 80th minute, and with the easy conversion the final score was 20-12 to the Edinburgh side. Both teams put in a tremendous amount of work considering that the ball was only out of play 3 times in the first half, however, the outstanding performances belonged to the Edinburgh squad from 1 through to 20, including a first start for young hooker Shondie McLean. Although the Glasgow crowd would have been disappointed with the result, they were certainly entertained by both teams and the impromptu pipers throughout the match. A good match all round which was also well officiated.
With RDVC recently scoring what is thought to be their highest ever score in a league match the previous Sunday, they are going for three in a row this Sunday against Grangemouth, kick off 2pm at Peffermill.
