Monday, 17 May 2010

The Glasgow University Tourney, attended by 8 Teams, saw a mixture of Student, National League and of course a Development League sides battle it out of the coveted prize of 7's Champions.

Broughton opened up against fellow Edinburgers, Lismore. In the summer sunshine, it was the NDL side who took the game to their loftier opponents. Tries in the first half by Cuthbertson (Con. Soiluva), Greer, Neill (pictured after scoring her first try for the Club), Fung opened up a 22-0 lead.

The second half offered no let up as the Broughton side increased the gap with Soiluva, Cuthbertson, and two further tries by Greer (with Soiluva converting the final score) to make the final score Broughton 44-0 Lismore.

Next up was Dundee University and the Students proved to be far tougher opposition.

Soiluva opened the scoring for Broughton within 2 minutes however shortly after the Students brought the scores level.

However the Finnish Flyer put her team back in the driving seat with a try which she also converted. Half Time Broughton 12-5 Dundee Uni

The second 7 minute half only produced 1 score, for the Students which thankfully wasn't converted and Broughton held on to win 12-10.

The final group game, with Broughton knowing a win would put them into the Grand Final, was against Glasgow Uni 'B'.

Laing opened her account for the afternoon to put Broughton into a first minute lead and Greer doubled the score 90 seconds later. The Students weren't lying down and hit back on the stroke of half-time with a converted try of their own. 10-7.

The second half saw Nicholls breach the whitewash after a Fung lung-bursting run saw the Prop run a solid 60 metres before getting caught 10 metres out however Nat was in support to score.

With 90 seconds lefty on the clock, Glasgow came back with a try however Laing made Broughton's place in the Final certain with a score at the death. Final Score, Broughton 20-12.

So, on to the Final and no prize for guessing who Broughton would be up against! Yes, the rugby nemesis that is Melrose!

In a pulsating first half, both teams traded tries like heavyweight boxers exhange blows in the ring. Eisner (another to open her Broughton account) and McFarlane getting Broughton's tries as the teams turned round 21-10 in Melrose's favour.

The second half however saw Melrose's Full Scotland Internationalist Halfpenny take over the show as her distribution and understanding of the shortened game saw her side run away with the title adding an impressive 7 tries as the forwards dominated Broughton side wilted in the west sunshine.

Overall, an impressive effort by a Broughton side who finish their inaugural season this coming week with a well earned trip to Barcelona.
