SECONDARY GIRLS' DEVELOPMENT DAY PDF Print
Wednesday, 07 October 2009

Stewartry Rugby Club hosted a girl’s rugby development day with 96 girls attending from local schools, Stewartry and Newton Stewart.

Stewartry and Newton stewart development officers John Muir and Steven Williams organised the day with the hope of increasing the numbers they have at their schools and club teams.

John Muir said “We’ve had a lot of interest from the girls in school curriculum lessons to have rugby sessions but have struggled to get them to make the transition to playing after school and at the clubs. Hopefully now the girls will feel more comfortable making that transition after meeting the other girls and making new friends.”

The day was split into a morning training session with fun games and drills for all of the girls to practice their tackling and passing before playing matches in the afternoon. The girls were given the option of contact or tag rugby for the games with 82 girls wanting to play the contact and only 14 girls opting for the TAG matches.

Steven Williams added “It’s good to see so many girls playing rugby and wanting to try playing the contact side of the game in their first real taste of rugby. We are also looking at setting up a Dumfries and Galloway girl’s development squad to compete in the national cup and 7’s events as well playing for their clubs.”

Following on from the success of this Development Day, the first session for the Dumfries and Galloway Girl’s Development Squad will be at Stewartry Rugby Club, Greenlaw, Castle Douglas on Monday 28th September 2009, 7.00pm start.
