Playing after latte-o-clock! PDF Print
Friday, 29 February 2008
A midweek trip to Peffermill saw Wandies make life hard for themselves as they eventually ground out a 29-0 victory against a tough and determined Uni side.

Playing after latte-o-clock clearly was a shock to the system for the visitors, as they took a while to get to grips with the conditions. Edinburgh University used their tactical kicking well to gain ground, with some good movement and interplay between the backs and forwards.

Not having it all their own way, Wandies nevertheless stuck in, with the new-look forward pack (including Ruthie playing in the foreign position of second row and even enjoying it(?!)) getting stuck in. In fact, Wandies seemed to get a bit too stuck in at some points, with numerous penalties for infringements at the breakdown allowing the home team to kick their way up the park.

Player of the match Julia, playing her first senior game at scrum-half, was a revelation, providing the back with ball that was so quick they were perhaps guilty of not knowing what to do with it!

The pace the scrum half injected allowed the Wandies backs more time on the ball, helping them to score 5 tries over the course of the game. It might have been more had it not been for a few more errors than Wandies would have liked, under the defiant pressure of the Students.

The real Hazel made an immediate impact when she came on, in her new position of flanker, and was very unfortunate to have her forward debut cut short by an ankle.

The home team also had their fair share of attacking opportunities, with only brave Wandies defence keeping them out. A try-saving tackle late in the game came from, you guessed it, Julia, and pack leader Beattie also showed by example by putting in some physical tackles around the breakdown.

Great support from Wenche and Sarah Quick, among others, allowed Wandies to play some more flowing rugby as the game neared its conclusion, and Tracy 'Unit' Mcadam boshed her way agonisingly close to the line in the dying seconds.

The teams meet again in the cup next week, in what promises to be another fascinating battle&
