On Saturday 2nd June the ???Mini Wandies??™ U15 & U18 teams were aiming to win their respective National 7s titles.
The day started early for the U15 team and their coaches as they met on the back pitches at Murrayfield for their first game of the day against Sevens debutants Melrose. In their first ever game Melrose tackled hard and showed great determination, but the Wandies soon got into their stride and ran in several tries. Next up was the old foe Monklands. Promising to be a tough game between two established sides who know each other well, it was Wandies who got on the scoreboard first through Lucy Watson, who impressed all day with silky running lines and a great work rate. The game remained tight and Wandies battled to hold on to their lead, however a try for Monklands came just a minute before the final whistle to tie the scores, full time 5-5. As one team had withdrawn this left a gap in the timetable allowing the girls to head into the stadium for the IRB Edinburgh 7s and cheer on Scotland v Russia, a great experience for all. In the quarter finals, Wandies had been drawn against the Northern Vixens, a select side from the North region. Despite being notably smaller than their opponents, the mini-Wandies skills shone through, and their excellent interplay, passing and pace saw tries from Lucy Watson, Ashley Manuel & Jenni Taylor. The prize for Wandies was a semi final against the formidable Gala team. Sadly for the girls this was where their day was to end as the larger Gala team took control and ran out winners of this game and of the overall tournament. This will undoubtedly provide a great development experience for the Wandies however, and with several new players this season, this team is surely set for success in the future. Squad: Lucy Watson, Abbie Anderson, Rachael Murray, Ashley Manuel, Jenni Taylor, Becky Gowans, Kate Story, Georgina Barker, Emily Te Kapa, Sarah Law, Orla Reid, & Jessica |
