The Scottish Women’s rugby performance programme is committed to identifying, developing and supporting talented rugby players by building on the platform achieved at the recent 2010 Rugby World Cup in the drive towards RWC 2014 / 2018.
After going into the Rugby World Cup event on a world ranking of ninth, a solid performance saw Scotland improve its standing to eighth place, providing plenty of positives for the developing squad. The growth of the Scotland Women's squad has underlined Scottish Rugby's commitment to continue to develop talented rugby players in Scotland.
The 2011/12 season will feature an extended Scotland Women squad and a Scotland Women U20's squad, with both teams working towards the 2014 / 2018 Rugby World Cups, as well as nurturing younger talent within the Performance Pathway. Players in the Scotland Women and Scotland Women U20's squads will take part in regular fitness testing, skills clinics (including specialist coaching sessions) and squad weekends in preparation for International compeition and RWC qualification. Both Scotland Women and Scotland Women U20 players will also regularly compete against each other throughout the Scotland Series competition programme, designed to develop and increase the intensity and preparation of players within a competitive environment. Players with the desire and ambition to represent Scotland Women or Scotland Women U20's are given the opportunity to participate in the Senior Regional Programme 2011-2012. This programme consists of training days and matches, where players are able to develop both individual and team skills amongst peers. In addition to the Senior Performance Programme, Scottish Rugby is committed to developing younger performance players to feed into the Scotland Women U20's squad. U18 and U15 players are offered the opportunity to participate within the 2011-2012 Girls Regional Programme (taking place over the summer months) to develop core skills and have the opportunity to play matches between the four regions. Girls from different ability levels and different sporting backgrounds are welcome to attend the open talent identification day (June 2012). The Girls Regional programme is based on Long Term player development principles to develop players within the performance game as well as improve the standards across club rugby in Scotland. |
