Women's rugby in the Stirling area is staging a revival as Stirling County womens rugby club is reborn this July.
With senior womens playing numbers in Scotland up by 13.5% and junior numbers up by 43% the new club stands as testimony to the fantastic growth of the womens game. Stirling County are now looking to provide women in Stirling and the surrounding areas with all levels of skill to be part of the set up at the famous Bridgehaugh club. Co-founder, Kelly Johnstone, graduated from Stirling University in 2007: "I started playing rugby since I started at university five years ago and have been playing ever since - I hadnt so much as seen a game of rugby before then! We need to start from the bottom and work up. Sarah and I both have our level one foundation coaching certificates so we plan to go around the schools and do taster sessions. Were hope it will give players, particularly the University, the chance to play rugby after they graduate because a lot of them come from the area. We dont just need players, we want people, people to come along and get involved with rugby to keep fit and have fun." Training will be held at Bridgehaugh (Stirling Countys ground) on Mondays and Fridays 7-9pm with pre-season starting Monday 14th July with the view to entering the national development league this coming season. |
