Murrayfield Wanderers retained the Sarah Beaney Memorial Cup with a hard fought victory over Hillhead / Jordanhill at Lasswade on Sunday.

The Cup final saw the top sides in women’s rugby go head-to-head in a closely fought encounter that saw Wanderers’ talismanic full-back, Lucy Millard score two injury time tries to seal the victory.

Hillhead started strong and took the game to the Wanderers with total commitment in the contact area with some unremitting and sometimes last gasp tackling.

Hillhead opened the scoring after four minutes where, from the kick-off, they had driven into the Wanderers 22 and pressed hard for a score.

Indiscipline from Murrayfield Wanderers saw a penalty given under the posts which stand-off Julie Craig duly accepted.
Hillhead then continued to put the pressure on their opposition with some searching kicks from Craig keeping the Wanderers back in their own half and their forwards launching themselves into every contact, scavenging for ball and often turning over Wanderers possession.

Wanderers however, continued to play expansive rugby, running the ball from all areas with a number of good attacks which were all foiled by a sterling Hillhead defence, particularly from full-back Hazel Bielinksi.

At the end of the first half it looked like Murrayfield were finally about to breach the Hillhead defence  but an amazing double tackle on wing Lizzie Willis saw her dragged down just short of the line.

Half time: 3-0

The second half saw Wanderers come out keen to match the physicality of the Hillhead forwards.

Finally, after 56 minutes, the Hillhead defence was breached when centre Laura Steven crashed over to score an unconverted try after some slick handling follow a tapped penalty.

However it wasn’t until the 81st minute that the Wanderers made the game safe with Millard breaching the midfield defence from her own half.

Lana Blyth continued the move and when the ball was recycled fly-half Rhona Shepherd attacked the right hand blind side and slipped the ball to Millard who went round the cover to score.

The try was converted by scrum half  Sarah Gill.

Three minutes into injury time Wanderers put the icing on the cake with a score from their own 10 metre line with Shepherd flicked the ball behind her back to supporting Millard who needed no further invitation, and scorched through a tired defence, demonstrated her evasive skills to go round two defenders and scored under the posts.

Gill converted once more to complete the scoring and see the trophy return to Murrayfield for another year.
