Murrayfield Wanderers 27, Edinburgh University 0 Sunday's result was always going to be a Wanderers win, judging by coach Jules' galvanising chat in the warm up. Her enthusiasm, with a slightly scary shouty edge, got the 'home' team (although Edinburgh uni kindly agreed to host the game due to Wandies currently being homeless) off to a great start. Some early hits from the home team set the tone of what was to be a hard fought game, with props Ellen and Beth the Dick leading the way with their aggressive defence. Winger Tracy deviated from her usual 'Walnut Whip' manouvre, showing her gas on the outside after some slick hands from the backs to score in the corner. Shank the flank was unfortunate not to get the conversion. Uni continued to defend hard, and there were numerous turnovers from both teams, making the game fairly unpredictable in parts. However, spurred on by Jules' words of wisdom (no sarcasm intended, seriously, her chat was actually that good!), Wanderers battered their way up the pitch, thanks to strong running from Jen Cram and Ruthie, eventually creating space for Katy 'SFD' Green to cross for the second try of the game. A third try followed shortly after as Rhona 'Carlos Spencer' Shepherd fed inside centre Lucy 'Zulfi' Millard a sweet inside ball to scoot through the gap to score. It is worth mentioning as it was one of the few times in the game where the two players managed to execute a backwards pass between them... Edinburgh Uni then upped their game and spent a long spell camped deep in Wandies territory. However, great defence from the forwards meant their efforts were held up. Wanderers were also let off the hook when Uni appeared to be clean through following a chip and chase. However, they had no reckoned on Emma 'Bates' Masters tracking back to make a try saving tackle. Wandies certainly breathed a sigh of relief, and managed to clear their lines. There was time for one more try in the first half, this one coming from Beth the Dick, who, following on from a great run of pick and go's,bossed expertly by scrum half Jenni Miller, stormed over from 2 metres to secure the bonus point. The bonus point almost came early when Lesley sniffed her debut try, showing great strength to stay in play and cross the line following a pass from SFD, only to be cruelly informed that it had been adjudged to be 'held up.' Half time: 22-0. The second half saw both teams trying to move the ball away from the contact area with a number of offloads going in, just perhaps one two many on some occassions. Swedish Wenche made a couple of great breaks, and was rewarded with a try for her efforts. She celebrated with a dance...oh actually that may have been later on when she was showing her exibitionist side. Uni nearly got a try back, with pocket rocket Nicky getting on the end of a good offload, only to be taken down short of the line, by a MASTERFUL (he he he) tackle by Emma. Stand off Shep was in quickly to do the necessary ball stealing, and Wandies were saved once again . The game finished soon after, with Murrayfield keeping a clean sheet for the second time in as many weeks. Full-time: Murrayfield Wanderers 27 Edinburgh University 0
