Oban Lorne WRFC were delighted to find that they had reached the finals of the Oban and Lorne Sports Awards in several categories both as a team and in some individual categories. This is an event held every two years to recognise commitment and achievement in sport. Ladies Coach Andy MacDougall had made it to the final three for the Coach of the Year category. Ironically the other two finalists were ladies Captain Dee Bradbury for netball coaching and Murray Hamilton for coaching the Oban mens and youth sides. This award went to Dee Bradbury, who coaches a number of netball teams. Oban stalwart Donna Smith reached the final three in the Sportswoman of the Year, but was sadly pipped at the post by the captain of the Scottish shooting team. The Oban girls were in the final three for Team of the Year. They were ecstatic when it was announced they had won and gratefully received a huge silver quaich. Julie Campbell, who at 15 has been selected for the Scottish U18 Development Squad for rugby was also in the final three in the Junior Sportswoman category. There were cheers all round when it was announced that she had won her category. A tremendous result for someone who has been playing for such a short time. The final award was for Sports Personality of the Year, which is also decided by a panelof judges and selected from all of the nominees in all of the categories. Fully expecting this to go to an individual, there were whoops of delight when the winner was announced as ...Oban Lorne Ladies RFC! Clutching all of their silverware the ladies and coach partied into the night. This was a huge morale booster to the ladies and recognises all of their hard work and travelling over the year. The New Year brings further NDL fixtures and a well deserved foreign trip to Mallorca Beach Rugby in May. |
