After the long trek to Aberdeen last week, in which the highlight of the game was Rainbow 'Carlos Spencer' Ovens selling not one but two dummies, and unleashing an electric sidestep to boot, Wanderers looked to continue their unbeaten run against Kirkcaldy at home. The pitch at Inverleith park was in far from perfect condition, in fact the players would have run faster had they been wearing flippers&but this didn’t stop both teams trying to move the ball and play a varied game.
The home team started off shakily, with Kirkcaldy defending admirably, spoiling numerous Wandies attacks. However they could only hold them out for so long, before Katy ‘Karen’ Green scored two tries in quick succession, showing off her excellent finishing skills. This got the home team on a roll, and some excellent linking between back and forwards saw the tries start to pile up over the course of the game. Great running lines from two-try Tange as well as from the front five, particularly Beattie and Beth the Dick, caused problems for the visitng defence the whole game, and Wandies aggression at the breakdown from every player on the pitch was vastly improved from recent performances. Amy Rennie was also back to her pocket-rocket best, being named player of the match, quite a feat given the high standard of effort and performance from the whole squad. Perhaps the pick of the tries came in the second half, when most of the team must have had a touch of the ball in the phases leading up to the score. Tracy received the ball on the wing after some great work from the forwards, allowing the midfield to ship the ball wide. Thinking, wisely, that Walnut Whip Mark 2 was not on the cards, she showed off a swanky (would that be with a silent s?) goosestep, and found support inside from several players, with Ruthie getting the try. Other highlights included Zulfi falling backwards over Rhona, Coach Jules in her hungover state ("pigs are scary??”) and Jenni Miller, finding herself on the wing and space and looking in horror as she realised she was going to have to run 50 metres herself in the mud to score a try. Final score 63-0 |
